Abstract: Considering the critical need for understanding about the environment in which there are interfaces between socially constructed knowledge, it is important to investigate how this topic is addressed by biology textbooks. We analyze the environmental theme in biology textbooks, written by Linhares and Gewandsznajder, which has better assessed by National Program for High School textbooks (PNLEM-2007). The methodology was inspired by the thematic content analysis is to identify the core meaning of a communication. We applied the analytical grid of unit records consist of titles, phrases and paragraphs that address environment, and that allowed the preparation of the six indicators of approaches: biological, environmental change, natural resources, control measures, socio-political and economic, technology and environment. Units of recording analyzed the predominant indicator of biological processes. It is necessary that the authors of the textbook with more intensity to contextualize the biological knowledge with knowledge related to environmental issues.
